Nice condition, from the 1920's.This unbelievable bottle reads in English "Mordche Hochman 1954 Bergen St. Brooklyn, N.Y. Registered Contents 26 FL. OZ", and in the very center, on a flag or banner, in Hebrew it says "Shomer Shabbos" (Sabbath Observant).There are a number of collectors of "Jewish" seltzer bottles, Jewish being defined as there being a Star of David on the bottle, or a Jewish name, which might have the initials in Hebrew on the bottle. But this bottle is simply unheard of. When I saw it, I almost fell over. Let me explain...Typically, the Eastern European Jewish immigrants who became seltzer bottle delivery men in the 1920's and 30's of New York, while proud of their heritage, would be eager to "fit in" as well, perhaps changing their first name if it was Yitzchak to Isidore, or Mordechai to Max. In order to scrape together a living, many would also drop a cornerstone of their religious upbringing and work on Saturday as well.The carrier of this bottle was not one of those typical immigrants, he kept his name "Mordche", (the Yiddishized version of "Mordechai"), and wanted to declare only one thing to his customers; "Look at me, hire me instead of my competitors, my life is more difficult then they, I won't deliver seltzer to you on Saturday because I don't work on the Sabbath, I therefore earn less money, but thats fine, because isn't our religion more important than money?"This is an incredible, moving piece of Jewish-Americana.Shipping including delivery confirmation is $10 to anywhere in the USA (insurance is extra and up to the buyer).
