Description
155 year old American book on distilling, First edition. Byrn, M. La Fayette, The Complete Practical Distiller: comprising the most perfect and exact theoretical and practical description of the Art of Distillation and Rectification, etc. Philadelphia: Henry Carey Baird, 1853. First Edition:, 12mo., (ca. 4 3/4 x 7 inches), bound in gilt and blind stamped dark brown cloth showing some wrinkles or bubbles and edgewear but still solid and very good. Spine appears to have had a label or stamp removed from near the bottom, faint name written on the top of the title page, no other internal marks of ownership. 198 p. illustrated, & 24 page publisher s catalogue in rear.. The Preface by Byrn is dated at New York in February, 1853. The subtitle continues: Including all of the most recent improvements in distilling apparatus; instructions for preparing spirits from the numerous vegetables, fruits, etc., directions fo the distillations and preparations of all kinds of brandies and other spirits, spirituous and other compounds, etc., etc., all of which is so simplified that it is adapted not only to the use of extensive distillers but for every farmer or others who may wish to engage in the art of distilling. The contents page has 4 pages of topics listed. I selected a few to give you an idea of some and the thoroughness of the book: Description of a Distillery, Some Directions to the Distiller, Of Distillation, and the Apparatuses made use of, Continuous Distillation, Mode of Working the Apparatus, Apparatus used principally in American and English Distilleries, Instruments to prevent inequality of Heat in Distillation, Of the Process of Malting, etc., French Method, English Method, Fermentation, Rectification, Common Process of Malt Distilling, Irish Usquebaugh, etc. Processes include more than malt whiskey, also various kinds of Gin, Rum, how to distill from potatoes, rice, cherries, apples, peaches, raisins, and this information from only part of the first two pages of the contents. (Anyone ever try tomatoes?) A very collectible copy of a scarce and important book in the history of American distilling. The book will give you a pretty thorough insight into the processes of distilling used in the U S and elsewhere and what was being processed into a beverage. (Interestingly Raudins publishing reprinted the 1875 edition of this book [listed as having 200 pages] and stated on their website that the first edition was 1854. No Reserve.
