Description
Ultra-Rare bottle. I've been showing  a number of extremely rare utiliarian persian bottles on Ebay lately.. all different. I admit the prices may seem high to most, but not really.  Remember, anytime you buy one of my Persian  bottles, you're investing in one of the rarist of all bottles. You may have been fortunate enough to have seen or even handled another Persian shaft and globe type bottle somewhere, but generally you can't just drive to your favorite bottle show and buy one. It's not that easy :) . I enjoy the fact that I'm able to offer them to you. Think about it.. You can easily pay 40-60,000.00 for a car which will likely end up in the scrap heap in 5 years... so  why not invest in a rare bottle that is, in my opinion, far more precious and rewarding to you over the long term....and something as good as gold or better!  ...and just to give someone a bit of an incentive...I've set the opening bid on this shaft and globe at just 1/10th of it's true value ...only 1999.00 ...  and have even included free shipping !  ****************************************************************************************************************************  As many collectors are aware, Persian ( Islamic) utilitarian glass bottles are poorly documented.. unlike most European and American utilitarian bottles which are so prevalent and easier to obtain. Even ancient Roman bottles are far better understood, simply due to the availability of large amounts of archaeological evidence. That being said however, there was still enough evidence about Persian glass bottles gathered in the 19th and early 20th C. to at least give us a basic idea about their age, especially when compared to the similarities found in other archaeological evidence composed of the glass and ceramics of  the nearby cultures of Syria, Egypt etc. I find that most seasoned collectors are able to tell the difference between more modern and genuine ancient glass with just a bit of direct handling and some closer examination. *****************************************************************************************************************************  This bottle is 11 " high x 6" wide. The lip was abruptly severed and left unfired. Crude applied rigaree was applied to form the collar. The base has a large area of roughness similar to  the size of a good sand pontil but appears partially refired. The base also shows lots of real wear. This has been checked closely under high magnification to validate the microscopic abrasions that come only with continual use over time. As with several of the Persian bottles in my collection, this bottle shows all the signs of being recovered from a dry burial. And this is why the bottle had remained in such amazing condition  untouched for at least 3 1/2 - 4 centuries.. There was no moisture -so there was zero internal /external deterioration. Condition mint.   However, some of my other Persian bottles had  obviously been buried with some fluid contents remaining when they were discarded or buried... and those do show some internal staining / degradation. ***************************************************************************************************************************** It's my hope that you will immediately recognize the inherent  beauty, rarity and value in this specimen and will surely want to add something really incredible and rare like this to your collection. Perhaps you can become inspired to create your own wonderful Persian collection. It's an exciting road to take. Each Persian bottle is a solitary masterpiece of the old glassblowers craft. To help increase your understanding of old Persian bottles, may I suggest for starters reading Mckearin's treatise on Islamic bottles ! However, I would point out that bottles such as this ultra rare shaft and globe style... won't be found even there. I'm continuing to do research whenever possible on all Persian utilitarian bottles, and all the while still collecting them .  I can tell you that aside from the more common dark green saddle flasks, unusual specimens rarely surface ..................................................................................................................................  REASON?  It's my belief that almost every utilitarian Persian bottle or utilitarian jar of the type I have been showing on ebay was brought here from Iran in the 1960's by an antique dealer in eastern US . I know a well known and respected collector who actually bought bottles from him back then, and who has related to me the details of these few shipments that came from Iran . When that source dried up, there was never any more shipments that ever again came out of Iran to the best of my knowledge. That was it! And what it meant then (as it does now)...is that.. Virtually every single utilitarian Persian bottle you see either on ebay or in collections (aside from ancient specimens collected privately in the 19th and early 20th C) was part of those 1960 shipments. Whatever is circulating on the open market now, or comes up on the market in the future, or is presently sitting in collections today, is probably from those Iranian shipments. And it's not likely under the present conditions in Iran etc, that you will ever see any more. The 1960's shipments were just a fluky little pocket in time when a couple of Iranian guys were able to somehow find and and secure a bunch of ancient bottles and were also able to make that US connection and luckily get the bottles out of Iran ( the details of which remain unclear). Aside from my collection I have only seen 3 other specimens turn up over the last 10 years. 2  showed up on Pacific Glass Auctions and the other just recently sold for a very low price from the fine Florida seller -givakik.  I somehow missed that one and only found out after the fact. All you pretty much ever see are the dark green "saddle flasks" which are the most common ( scale 1000-1) of old Persian bottles. Those too by the way were also all mainly from the same persian guys  in the 60's...but there was a sh--load of those compared to the very few of the other stuff. *****************************************************************************************************************************  If you have a copy of Willy Van den Bossches' book - Antique Glass Bottles...please notice the earliest known examples of English bottles 1632 -1660...and are called Shaft and Globe ( page 66  plate 1-2) . Notice the full roundness of the globes as compared to this Persian example.  The same ! ..Nice and round! The second English example also has a very similar neck and applied ring placement to the Persian. After 1660 the globe begins to lose it's roundness and begins to chamfer inwards below the midline. I'm pointing out the similarity to the early Englsh bottles because it is also my belief that the European/English glassblowers may have indeed copied this Persian design for their own earliest examples.  But this is just pure conjecture though, and I have nothing to substantiate that theory.  I mean the shape is just a simple logical form to create anyways. Even the Romans and Syrians made this shape but their bottles were generally quite small. The later Crusades no doubt brought many new design ideas to England and Europe. I have 5 or 6 of these Persian shaft and globes in my collection . ******************************************************************************************************************************    Bidders with 0 feedback bidders please contact me prior to bidding ****************************************************************************************************************************** Please feel free to email me with any questions ******************************************************************************************************************************   Bottle offered at low opening bid of only 1999.00 and no reserve.
