Muslin covered the jar to prevent the leeches from climbing out. These containers are not to be confused with apothecary candy jars. They came in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some were porcelain and some were glass. Why I think what you have is a leech jar; it’s very tall and odd shaped. The odd shape would slow, if not prevent leeches from climbing out.
