BARBER SHOP BOTTLES' Description   Beautiful rare pair of Quadruple Plate Silver barber shop bottles made by Derby Silver Co. of Derby & Birmingham, Connecticut between 1873-1890's. High quality Art Nouveau period Genie bottle design with handchased scrolls & spirals. Each barber bottle has its original silver stopper. Originally these stoppers were attached with a chain and connected to a small loop attached to the bottle. The small loop on each bottle has been lost and there is only a small remnant of the chain left on one bottle. There is a small solder mark on each where the loop used to be attached (see pics # 11 & #12). These are in overall very good condition. Each one has a small dent to each side.   Barber shop bottles were very popular beween 1810-1910 and were used by the barber to store hair oil, hair tonic, shampoo, rosewater etc. These could have been used to style women's hair too. These are very ornate and very hard to find in silver. They must have been part of an elegant barber shop and highly prized. Barber shop bottles stopped being made after the 1906 Pure Food & Drug Act made it illegal to refill non-labeled bottles.   Each bottle measures 8" tall to the top of the stopper and 4 1/4" wide at its widest point. Each needs a good polishing and cleaning inside and out. Each is hallmarked on the bottom and reads "Derby Silver Co. Quadruple Plate 1900". Great addition to any Barberiana collection.
