Description
This is a very nice green glass jar. It is a Leclanche wet cell battery jar. These were made by Georges Leclanche from 1866 to the early 1890's. The jar still has half of its original label (see photo). There is a circle pattern in the upper right label that says Gonda. It says CHICAGO 1893, then has a list of patents from 1882 to 1891 (see photo). Then there is a long paragraph of instructions on how to use the battery. The very last line says THE LECLANCHE BATTERY CO., New York. One side of the jar has PATENTED MAY 23, 1882 embossed on it (see photo). Above the word patented are the embossed numbers 3, 2, and 1 (1 being nearest the top) with liquid level lines embossed (these would not show up in the pictures) beside each number. On another side is a large (.5 inch), embossed, capital A. Two of the side corners have seam lines and the glass has many natural bubbles (see photo). This jar is in excellent condition with no breaks, cracks, or chips. The green glass is beautiful. It is a little dusty and dirty, but I will leave cleaning to whomever wants it. The jar is 7 inches X 4 inches X 4 inches. The opening diameter is 3.5 inches. It weighs approximately 1 pound 13 ounces.
