Description
rhusrluk rhusrluk Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.little A stunning German stoneware Bellarmine jug, storage bottle, or 'Bartmann' with a magnificent 'tiger' glaze of delicious, deep amber / orange color; the narrow neck with an applied Cardinal Bellarmine bearded face mask with a very unusual heart shaped mouth, the belly with an applied medallion with a stylized leaf and branch design; probably Frechen, but possibly Woolwich (London), circa 1600 – 1650. There are Bellarmine jugs and there are Bellarmine jugs – this handsome jug has all the desirable features including an all-over bold and rich tiger glaze. I have admired this jug for many years in my own collection for its features and quality. This beautiful bellarmine will grace any specialist collection. It will also be a magnificent display item in any early period setting. . This jug or bottle is beautifully and elegantly potted with a bulbous body, tall neck with finely turned rings below the mouth and a short squatty flared foot. There is a superb 'Cardinal Bellarmine' or 'Green Man' mask just under the mouth and a correspondingly rudimentary medallion on the fattest part of the body. An interesting feature is the base, which shows no wire marks and does not appear to be wire-cut from the turning wheel. The wire cutting process is normally done with most all German stoneware jugs of this period. This one appears to be wiped smooth in the manner of English made Bellarmines. While it is likely that this is a Frechen product, it is also possible that it was made at Woolwich in London in the 1640s. This may explain the unusually rudimentary medallion and smooth base. We know that a small experimental kiln was made by German immigrant potters at the Old Woolwich Ferry approach in London in the 1640s, but little is known about its products, so a positive identification in respect of this bottle is not possible given the current state of knowledge (see David Gaimster German Stoneware 1200 – 1900 [1997], pp. 309ff for fascinating remarks on the Woolwich and early Fulham stoneware Bellarmine jugs). Frechen, the more likely source of this fine Bellarmine jug, is a small town only a few miles from Cologne near the Eifel foothills. It has good deposits of high-silica clay and quartz sand, essential for the making of stoneware (Gaimster, op. cit. p. 208). Some typical examples of Frechen stoneware bottles of the 1600-50 period can be seen in Gaimster (op. cit., pp. 220-221). This superb bottle is approximately 9 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches in diameter at the base. It is in superb condition with a few typical small chips around the foot but no cracks or restoration at all. Condition is as good as they come! Well that's it! What a fine jug this is!!
