Description
This is a very special Ontario quarter gallon jug from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The pottery is a buff redware with flesh coloured glazing. It bears all the characteristics of pottery made at the Brownscombe works in Peterborough. Circa. 1870-80. The jug is merchant marked for R/. Donald, Grocer, 184 King St E., Toronto. This is a molasses style jug with pour spout and is a very rare form to find in such a small size. The jug measures 8 inches tall and about 4 ½ inches in diameter across the base. A sweet little piece. The pottery is crudely worked with plenty of character. The condition is very good. The is some chipping on the thin edge of the spout. One of the chips is 1 ½ inches long – really a deep flake. The is a hairline crack in the spout about ¾ inch long. This is clearly associated with the application of the handle. There is a large potstone on the face just above the first line of writing and another large one at the rear. The incised writing varies a lot in depth. The word “GROCER” and “Toronto” are both quite faint but legible. A very different and rare small size jug that will stand out on the shelf! Shipping costs vary enormously depending on the size and weight of the package and the location of the purchaser. Do not rely on the quote at the bottom of the listing. Write me with your particulars if you want a quote. I pack well and use the cheapest shipping available. Wait to pay until I can calculate your shipping and give you a total.
