Description
Ultra Rare Handblown Poland Springs Liquor Quart. The original Moses Poland Springs bottle were made in South Jersey at the Salem Glass Works in 1876 - Salem eventually became Anchor Hocking Glass and after prohibition they made Moses liquor bottles. All of these liquor bottles were machine made.  Offered for action here is believed to be the only handblown version of the Moses Hiram Ricker liquor bottle. Clevenger Glass Works would sometimes make special order handblown pieces. One of Clevenger regular  customers was Anchor Hocking, usually making commemorative & retirement bottles. But on one occassion Anchor Hocking asked Clevenger to make a handblown version of the Moses quart liquor bottle. They loaned the Moses mold to Clevenger and these were made in very limited numbers and were never sold to the public.   11" height - hand tooled neck and rough pontil. Aqua blueish/green. There is a small chip on the lip.  On the top rear in an arch are the words: FEDERAL LAW FORBIDS SALE OR RE-USE OF THIS BOTTLE" & along the rear bottom is:"FAC-SIMILE OF FIRST POLAND WATER BOTTLE HIRAM RICKER & SONS, INC" There are production marks embossed on the bottom along with the rough pontil - the pontil covered some of the marks so there're not fully readable. On the bottom is" R-61, 9 -? - 41, 4".   Clevenger was the last of the old time South Jersey Glasshouses and likely the last of it's kind anywhere. In the 18th & 19th century, South Jersey was the center of glass manufacturing in America. There were dozens of glass factories, employing thousands of workers. At that time all glass was made by hand and the masters blowers were true craftsmen. After the invention of the automatic glass machines in the early 1900's, South Jersey glass workers were no longer needed and moved on to other employment. A few however, continued the tradition of South Jersey Glass blowing by operating small glasshouses. Over time these too disappeared as the old time masters died off. Clevenger was one the more successful & prolific of these. It operated much the same as the great glass factories of the 1700 & 1800's, but on a much smaller scale. Operating from 1930 till 1999, the small unpretentious factory is still standing and has been designated a Historic Site. The glass formulas were from the original Moore Bros Glass Works in Clayton(circa 1870). Their blown glass often contains the impurities of Early American Glass - bubbles, batch stone, cord and blisters. Collectors of Clevenger Glass possess a unique, genuine link to the roots of American Glass and it is becoming a prized collectible sure to increase in value       Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
