Description A rare black glass freeblown cylinder with squatter wider bodied form well sealed to mid body, reading "A.S/C.R", standing for All Souls Common Room. The seal variation is attributed in Fay Banks as no4, of 'Flat' type, apparently the first of the ASCR seals, produced at the Dennis Glasshouse, Stourbridge (Bachelor), circa 1763 - 1783. According to Banks this is the first of the seals produced for All Souls College, Oxford, England, where they had recently started expanding their cellar facilities for use by the fellows. Two batches of these sealed bottles were ordered by the College in 1760. These were supplied by the Dennis (Bachelor) glasshouse in Stourbridge. Fay Banks suggests a date span for this seal as 1763 - 1783.An attractive shape, full original surface gloss, with deep almost conical kickup and light sand pontil, heavily sagged base, rippled and attractively naturally pitted surface, rounded shoulders starting somewhat suddenly from the top of the dip mold, going into a perfectly proportional slightly bulged neck going through the unusual flattened collar like applied stringrim well below a sheared off and refired lip10 1/4 inches high, and almost 4 inches diameter base. Excellent condition, no stars or cracks, chips or bruises. Light original cellar grime in places easily rubbed off if required to reveal full shine beneath.
