Description
SCHAFER & VATER NOVELTY FLASK"My Bosom Friend" -- "Der Busenfreund"This German Company is famous for its humorous flasks and bottles, as well as a wide range of hard paste porcelain items including, but not limited to dolls' heads, creamers, pitchers, hat pin holders, hair receivers, etc. Their flasks, figurines and figural bottles were so popular that by 1910 items made by this factory were picked up and listed in the Sears & Roebuck Catalogue that had such widespread distribution across America in that time period. The "giveaway" bottles and flasks were all imported empty and then filled and given away as gifts by bars, liquor stores, at dances, by organizations, just to name a few sources. Many were ordered as holiday gifts or advertising gimmicks and the manufacturer impressed or stamped the name of the business or group on the items before shipping. Others used paper labels applied in the U.S.The figural liquor bottles were designed to make cocktail time a "good time" As is understandable, they were most popular in the United States in the 1920's.THIS ONE IS A BEAUTY!!!!This bottle is all shades of blue and white. There are no damages: cracks, spots, chips or crazing. What may show up as spots on some of my pictures are merely spots of blue under the glaze. She's a "well-endowed" smiling, lovely girl with hair in the style of the "flappers" of the 1920's. She's dressed in sleeveless dropped waist dress, low cut both front and back, and the top part of a billowing skirt is indicated. One hand holds a bottle -- a happy bottle decorated with eyes, nose and mouth, etc. -- and this bottle is perched on our gal's large bosom. Her other hand rests on the left side of her .... She coquettishly smiles and looks at the bottle out of the corner of her big eyes. The legend in front indicates in German that this bottle is her bosom friend! The top portion of the bottle and its cork are the actual stopper of the flask. A small piece of the bottom of the cork is missing, but the stopper fits easily in the flask's opening and stays in place. The bottle is about 6 3/4" tall, about 2 3/4" deep and the oval that contains the words "Der Busenfreund" is 2 1/2" across. Impressed in the white bisque bottom, there is a mold number which I believe is "7711" as well as the crown with circle emblem. There is no stamp stating "Germany" but it is a well-known piece from the Schafer & Vater inventory. Please feel free to email me any questions you might have and also look for the other Schafer & Vater items and other porcelain bottles I have up for auction. I am not an expert in this field, but I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.Thank you very much for your interest.
