Description
SCHAFER & VATER NOVELTY FLASK"YOUR HEALTH" DRINKOMETERThis German Company is famous for its humorous flasks and bottles, as well as a wide range of hard paste porcelain items. Their flasks, figurines and figural bottles were so popular that by 1910 items made by this factory were picked up and listed in the Sears & Roebuck Catalog that had such widespread distribution across America in that time period. The "giveaway" bottles and flasks were all imported empty and then filled and given away as gifts by bars, liquor stores, at dances, by organizations, just to name a few sources.  Many were ordered as holiday gifts or advertising gimmicks and the manufacturer impressed or stamped the name of the business or group on the items before shipping.  Others used paper labels applied in the U.S. They were so popular because they were artfully made hard paste porcelain, unusual and interesting items and therefore had broad appeal.  The figural liquor bottles were designed to make cocktail time a "good time"  As is understandable, they were most popular in the United States in the 1920's.The "DRINKOMETER" style flask was one of the more unusual types made by Schafer & Vater -- Consequently they are harder to find.  Making this even a rarer item is the fact that the porcelain bottle was made with an inset rectangular space designed to hold a glass bulb from which a thin glass tube extends.  This is the "meter" portion.  A liquid in the bulb at the bottom supposedly would rise up the tube to indicate the condition of the "would be" drinker and let him (or her) know just "how much to drink!"Along the top of one side of the flask is the title: "Drinkometer" in raised white lettering .Reading from the bottom of the flask up are the possible levels of drink:Normal__Dry__Very Dry__Thirsty__Take 1 Drink__Take 2 Drinks__(A very scientific way of determining your needs!)The other side of the flask has the raised image of a gentleman drinker with a bit of scrollwork surrounding his image and the words "YOUR HEALTH" below him. This flask is grayish-blue and white on all sides.  It measures 5 1/4" tall, 3" across and about 1 1/4" in depth. The same mold was used, I believe, to make 2 other flasks, both multicolored, one having a light brown background and the other a very dark brown main color.  I do not believe this "Drinkometer" was made in the usual blue and solid brown Schafer & Vater colors. The matching gray porcelain cap is missing, but it sounds like the cork is inside. There are no damages apparent on this piece.  The glass portion is perfect and attached to a piece of cardboard by metal rings and is lightly glued into the opening designed to hold it. "Made in Germany" is lightly stamped on the white bisque bottom of the flask.  Also stamped on the bottom in a larger size font is the following: "D.R.G.M." and below this, "No. 541847"  I do not know when these larger marks were stamped or by whom.  Please feel free to email me any questions you might have and also look for the other Schafer & Vater items and other porcelain bottles I have up for auction.  I am not an expert in this field, but I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.Thank you very much for your interest.
