Description
WILLIAM CARR BLACKBURN SALTGLAZE SLAB SEAL STONE BOTTLE This is a superb early (circa 1860's), slab seal stoneware porter. The slab seal on the front, which is unusually well struck, depicts a large picture of an old wooden horse drawn farm or traders cart, with the words: 'TRADE MARK' impressed through the middle and the trade name: 'WILLIAM, CARR BLACKBURN impressed above and below. nb note the odd comma after 'WILLIAM' and before 'CARR' , does this mean it was two different names trading together ? There are some lovely areas of dark brown to the saltglaze finish on the bottom - where the salt collected in the saltglazing/firing ? Size is 6 1/2" (170mm) tall Condition is very good, with only a few tiny nicks here and there around the lip and base, and a small chip on the bottom edge on the back (see photos). There is also a couple of kiln touch marks either side of the slab seal, which are often found on these (again see photos). However, overall I say this was a good example of this bottle, and I only mention the above condition items in so much detail as I prefer to be absolutely accurate in my condition descriptions. So there it is, a good example of this seldomly seen slab seal, that I've done my best to describe as accurately as I can. However if you do require anymore information please contact me and I'll do my best to provide it.
