Description
bottlebuff2 Store       Wide Mouth Jar in Forest Green - Saratoga Mtn. Glass   Here is an incredible piece of utilitarian craftsmanship, originating from the Mount Vernon Glass Works in Vernon, New York, which was in business from 1844 to 1890 (also known as the Saratoga Mountain Glass Works). This jar measures  just  5 3/4" in height, and 2 3/4" across at the base. The color is a medium to deep forest green. This example is just loaded with whittle, as well as hundreds of tiny bubbles throughout. This bottle is a 2 piece hinge mold (check out the base pictures), which was originally used for beer (like a stubby) or a small whiskey. The top was cut off and expanded, with a thin single strip of glass utilized and applied as its lip.It is also extremely heavy, having a great deal of glass used in this piece. This is just a solid example, with absolutely NO chips, cracks or stain noted at all. The color is a brilliant and crisp FOREST GREEN  . Crude and absolutely full of whittle and character, do not let this one get away. There is absolutely NO high point wear on this piece at all. A great example of the early New York Glassmakers art .The base does not appear to be pontiled, but is definitely crude.Whittle, bubbles, character and COLOR...COLOR...COLOR...This is a premium example that should not be ignored.A great addition to any bottle collection or display.**************************************************************HERE IS SOME ADDITIONAL INFO I RECEIVED ABOUT THIS BOTTLE, FROM ANOTHER COLLECTOR :I have been researching at Mt Pleasant for 30 years and yes this bottle was made there. Mt Pleasant outside of Saratoga was the sucessor to the Mt vernon works which was in Central NY. This bottle is a E Waters Troy (like the inks) blacking bottle-unfortunately without the label. I have one without and one with the label. One of these sold at GWks a while back with the label for $2200. The mold is very pecular and identifiable. Your price is correct as it is a fairly rare piece to find for the utility collectors*************************************************************************  Certain images and/or photos used in this template are the copyrighted property of Jupiter images and are being used with permission under license.
